This project will develop new nanoarchitectured hybrid particles which exhibit multiple functions, including self-healing when damaged, and long-term anti-corrosion properties. Nanoarchitectures can serve as ideal host matrices for encapsulation of corrosion inhibitors which can immediately form an anti-corrosive layer when the steel surface is damaged. The resulting nanoarchitectured hybrid nanoparticles can be mixed with the resin-based coating materials developed by Baosteel, to produce new multi-functional coating materials for Zn-plated steel sheets. With this new coating layer, Zn-plated steel sheets are expected to show improved and sustained weather resistance, corrosion resistance and acid/alkali resistance.
