Project Title: Investigating solidification defects and improving quality of nitrogen-bearing steel using electric furnace smelting and continuous casting

This project aims to tackle scientific and practical issues associated with elevated nitrogen (N) levels in electric arc furnaceproduced steel during subsequent continuous casting process. An integrated approach will be established by combining insitu observation, thermo-mechanical testing, and numerical simulation to investigate the solidification process in various Nbearing steels. The correlation between N contents, solidification, precipitates, and surface cracking will also be identified to develop effective control strategies for the on-site processes at Baosteel. The anticipated outcomes will contribute to the broader knowledge base of steel production technology and innovation and appreciably improve product quality, market share and reputation of Baosteel.
